While photogrammetry lacks absolute scale out-of-the-box (requiring explicit reference measurements during solving), it bakes high-resolution texture details directly onto the geometry—providing an invaluable reference for reconstructive 3D artists.
  • Camera Settings for Photogrammetry: Shot in manual mode with a fixed aperture, fast shutter speed (to eliminate motion blur), and the lowest possible ISO. While hero props use studio dome-lighting, RAW capture, and low ISOs, on-set photogrammetry adapts to dramatic lighting by maintaining clean hand-held stabilization or portable gimbals while capturing shadow details.
Lens Distortion Grids
Every optical lens introduces geometric distortion—especially wide-angle lenses, fisheyes, and non-linear squeezed anamorphic glass ("hard mode").
To allow the compositing department to accurately un-distort and re-distort footage during 3D tracking and CG integration:
  1. Grid Setup: A flat, magnetic checkerboard grid is mounted on a perfectly level board at a 90-degree perpendicular angle to the camera.
  2. Execution at Wrap: At wrap, while the crew strikes lighting, the supervisor and DP capture grid passes for every lens, focal length, sensor format, and focus distance used during the day.
  • Focus Racks: If a shot involves a focus pull, a sequence of grid passes is shot across varying focus distances. Each pass begins with a slate or digital tablet displaying setups to bake parameters directly into the video file.
Witness Cameras & Dynamic Lighting Capture

  • LED Volume Screen Green Passes: Shooting green pass plates on LED video walls represents an ultra-complex challenge. Shutter sync artifacts, refresh rates, and moiré patterns require pre-shoots and meticulous calibration before rolling main units.
